For most birds, rarity is relative to the place of interest.  A bird may be rare "here", but common "there".  Rare birds enliven the study of a particular place.  Birders gain recognition for finding rare birds, and other birders travel hundreds of miles to see a bird that is rare to a state or country.  The study of rare birds reveals how birds migrate and how they become disoriented, and how dispersal can lead to range expansion.  Some birds are rare throughout their range, among them are species that are considered threatened or endangered.  The pictured bird is a Fork-tailed Flycatcher, a rare visitor to the United States from Mexico, Central America, and South America.  A notch on the third primary of each wing indicates that this particular bird represents the subspecies from southern South America.  About a thousand birders went to The Nature Conservancy's Southmost Preserve in Texas to see this particular individual.

Instead, it was an immature White-tailed Hawk at Mitchell Lake, San Antonio, TX

ID'd by MMS from video shot 3 days earlier (3 May 2008) during the Audubon Sanctuary's Bird-a-thon!

The 4th really southern flycatcher reported for Texas in 3 months
