Baby birds puzzle people.  When we find juveniles on the ground, we want to return them to their nest.  Ornithologists know that fledglings leave their nests often several days before they are ready to fly.  If a child discovers a “grounded” baby, you are encouraged to suggest to them that they step about 100 feet back and wait for 15-20 minutes for the parent or parents to visit the baby to feed it.  On a wider note, ask people in your neighborhood to keep their cats inside during March-May in the south and April-June in the northern states.  Cats are known to consume about 90% of the birds that fledge from their nests.   Cat predation may lead to survival of the fittest, notably grackles and mockingbirds at the expense of warblers, thrushes, and other songsters around homes.

Local birders discover two more rarities in Texas

Gray Kingbird and Masked Duck taped 11 November 2007 northwest of Corpus Christi, Texas

This long-billed kingbird species normally occurs in the West Indies and Central and South America.

This species of duck is tropical, too, occurring in Texas primarily during wet years.
